Fifty years old is the cutoff of many people. For some, it can mean that their retirement is up. For the others, it indicates that the changes that are happening in their body are about to come to an end. No matter what your endeavor in life is, you should know that by the time you reach 50, things will never be the same again.

The age of 50 may come exciting. But there are drawbacks, just like any other age brackets. One of the many negative aspects of this age is that these individuals can get this thing called shingles. What is this thing about?

Shingles is a viral infection. The virus, particularly the varicella-zoster virus, is capable of contaminating a person’s nerve area. Ouch. So, what happens if a person, particularly a 50-year-old, has this infection?

You could tell if a person is suffering from shingles if he or she feels pain in the skin that was supplied by the nerve affected by the virus. And because of the infection, a rash forms around that area of the skin. Other than that, symptoms of this infection include:

  • Sensitivity A person with shingles could experience a region of their skin wherein it would be sensitive to the touch.
  • Feelings of pain, burning, tingling or numbness Not only will it be sensitive to the touch but can also be painful. Other people can feel that the region of their skin is burning. Tingling and numbness areis also part of the package.
  • Red rash This rash develops days after feeling the pain on the skin.
  • Blisters filled with fluid And the worst thing about these blisters is that it can break open and crust over the affected region.
  • Itching And of course, the classic among all viral infections that include the skin: itching. Did you see that coming?

Nobody wants to experience that situation, right? So how do we prevent getting into contact with this varicella-zoster virus? What does one need to know about it?

This virus is the same one that causes chickenpox. Those who have had suffered from chickenpox in their earlier years may be more than likely to be ill with shingles. In other times, shingles can be called herpes zoster. And no, this is not the same herpes that can infect on your genital area.

Did you remember about that fact that singles affect those who are ages 50? Turns out, it is not the only age bracket that suffers from such infection. It can also affect the younger ones. Though it is a fact that the more you age, the greater your chance is of being infected with the virus.

In every 3 persons, one would most likely experience the infection in their lives. If you have been infected by the varicella-zoster virus, there is a big chance that you will not experience shingles for the second time around. But there is only a big chance. There are people who have had the disease in the past and have to experience it again.

So, can we call it a common disease? Sadly, yes. Singles is a common disease. Let us ask what our groups of experts in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention have to say about this disease. These are the facts the CDC has gathered about shingles in the American population:

  • Hospitalization for patients suffering from shingles is high especially if the patient has a weak or suppressed immune system.
  • Every year, almost 100 people lost their lives to shingles.
  • The cases of shingles among older adult increases as the years pass by.
  • More and more people are getting vaccinations against shingles.

Can this disease be prevented? Of course, it can. And one way of feeling positive you will not experience such pain and suffering is by getting vaccinated against the varicella-zoster virus.
